US State Department employees are being encouraged to snitch on their “anti-Christian colleagues”.

An internal email sent out by Marco Rubio, the US secretary of state, details how the department will collect evidence of anti-Christian bias by its own employees via anonymous tip-off forms.

The initiative is part of an effort to root out anti-Christian bias announced by Donald Trump in February.

Mr Rubio, who issued the notice across the State Department and to its embassies around the world, will present the findings to a task force chaired by Pam Bondi, the US attorney general, on April 22.

Department employees are encouraged to report each other via an anonymous form, and instructed that their accounts should be as “detailed as possible” and include “names, dates and locations” of where the incidents took place.

Officials told Politico they were alarmed by the move, claiming it could create a culture of fear as staff turned on each other.

Even if the notice was well-intentioned, they said, it was based on the false premise the department was hostile to Christians in the first place.

“It’s very ‘Handmaid’s Tale’-esque,” one employee said, referring to the dystopian novel by Margaret Atwood, a Canadian author.

In an executive order issued in February, Mr Trump declared his administration would root out hostility to Christians in government.

He accused his predecessor Joe Biden, a lifelong Catholic, of engaging in an “egregious pattern of targeting peaceful Christians, while ignoring violent, anti-Christian offences”.

Bias in the State Department is not specifically mentioned in the order, beyond Mr Rubio’s inclusion as a member of the task force.

However, it claimed that Mr Biden’s justice department had brought criminal charges against nearly two dozen pro-life protesters demonstrating outside abortion clinics.

At the same time, Mr Trump said the justice department “largely ignored” cases of violence against Catholic churches and charities as cases of vandalism and arson surged.

The order goes on to claim Mr Biden’s administration had sought to force Christians to “affirm radical transgender ideology against their faith”, and prevent them adopting children if they did not “conform to certain beliefs on sexual orientation and gender identity”.

The State Department notice stated that although Mr Trump’s executive order focused on anti-Christian bias, “targeting anyone for their religious beliefs is discriminatory and is contrary to the Constitution”.

The State Department has been approached for comment.
