Besides the partial invectives of Zosimus (always discontented with the Christian reigns) see the grave representations which Synesius addresses to the emperor Arcadius (de Regno, p. 25,26, edit. Petav. [Paris, 1612]). The philosophic bishop of Cyrene was near enough to judge; and he was sufficiently removed from the temptation of fear or flattery.
